Veni Markovski's current work is focused on the following main topics:
Business consultancy
Veni Markovski is consulting a number of companies all over the world on issues ranging from
business development, marketing and communications policy, general management and future planning.
His nine years of executive management while running the second in history of Bulgaria Internet
Service Provider BOL.BG, are providing him with
the right knowledge about business development. His last years of vast international
experience have helped Mr. Markovski to create unique know-how, which is useful today for
companies worldwide.
Security
Cyber Security Cooperation.
Bulgaria has been known for a number of cases, involving ID-thefts, credit card frauds,
computer viruses, etc.
This all changes. The newly elected Bulgarian government, headed by the Internet Society member
Sergey Stanishev, is trying to change that.
Recently the National Security Council of the Republic of Bulgaria decided that the
State Agency for IT and
Communications, together with the NSC Secretariat, will work on
changing the legal framework in order to combat computer crime.
As I am advising the Chairman of the Agency on international projects, this is one of my
top priorities now. I also had meetings with the newly elected attorney general (chief
prosecutor) Mr. Boris Velchev to discuss possible actions with regards to training of
prosecutors on combating cyber-crime.
The Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin stated the interest of the Government of Bulgaria
during his October 2005 meeting with US State Secretary Condoleeza Rice. The official
press release noted, "
Bulgaria reconfirmed its interest in setting
up a cybernetic security center with the assistance of the US."
During a recent visit of the Bulgarian minister of interior Rumen Petkov to the USA, he also
discussed these problems with the US Authorities. The issue of combating cyber crime
was one of
the topics of his meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State
Anne W. Patterson in February 2006. The US Government has allocated $ 4 Million support to
programs in Bulgaria.
Veni's role in this area is at the advisory level in his capacity of senior adviser to the Chairman of
the State Agency for IT and Communications. On these issues, he also works in close
cooperation with Mr. Petko Sertov, the
National Security Adviser of the Bulgarian Prime Minister. He also frequently reports to the
prime minister
Sergey Stanishev (who is also member
of the Internet Society), and to the minister of foreign affairs Ivailo Kalfin. Bulgarian
President Georgi
Parvanov is also
interested in this subject, as you may see from this
speech.
Free and Open Source Software
Markovski is currently involved in a number of projects, related to usage and promotion of
free and open source software.
You can visit for more information on those projects the following web sites:
FOSS.bg -
the Free and Open Source Software Project for SEEurope,

There are several more coming.
In 2005-2006 Veni was also involved in the management
of the launch of the Bulgarian version of Creative
Commons. Upon his invitation, prof. Lawrence Lessig
came to Bulgaria to have wonderful lectures and meetings. His visit was made possible with the
kind cooperation of the United Nations Development Program.
Markovski's role there is either of project manager, or overall guidance of the efforts of the
Bulgarian Internet Society in these
areas.
Global Internet Policy and Internet Governance
Veni Markovski was the country coordinator for the Global
Internet Policy Initiative - a program for helping countries to change their legislature
in order to make it friendly and in favor of developing freedom of access to information.
This, combined with his experience as a lawyer in defending the
freedom of the Bulgarian Internet
gives him a lot of knowledge, which he shares today with specialists and colleagues from all over the world.
These qualities of his are used for the ISOC-Bulgaria project on Internet Governance (ended 2006). The project was supported by a number of national and
international organizations, which only shows the importance of the topic, and the quality of
ISOC-Bulgaria in performing.
What he has done since 2002 at the WSIS on the
topic of Internet Governance can be best described by the words of the swiss
diplomat Mr. Markus Kummer, who in interviews
for the Bulgarian media, among other said,
"Bulgaria played a very constructive role [during WSIS], focusing
on the issues and trying to find concrete solutions in line with the technical
realities regarding the functioning of the Internet. This role was possible thanks
to the expertise of the Bulgarian delegate, Mr Veni Markovski, who apart from his
various function inside Bulgaria is also a member of the ICANN Board of Directors
and has a vast international experience."
Mr. Markovski is also a frequent speaker at different conferences, seminars
and workshops, where he shares
his
experience and search for new opportunities.
